Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity

Volunteers play a huge role in the success of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls. They help with everything from building and repairing homes to assisting at our ReStore. There is absolutely no experience needed, just a willingness to show up and lend a hand! We have fun and meaningful opportunities year-round.

John Homstad Volunteer of the Year

About John

John Homstad was a regular volunteer at Habitat for Humanity since 2014. He volunteered over 4,000 hours and helped numerous families in our community have a safe, affordable place to call home! John was given the “Construction Volunteer of the Year” award in 2016 and the “Individual Volunteer of the Year” award in 2020. John was not a fan of receiving recognition and would think we are all silly for naming an award after him.

He sadly passed away from cancer in August 2023.

Who Receives This Award?

The John Homstad Volunteer of the Year Award will be awarded yearly to individuals, groups and organizations that go above and beyond, advocate for Habitat and demonstrate leadership as John did during his time with us.

Congratulations to Steve and Kaye Cook, the recipients of the 2024 award!

Our Impact

“I love getting to say that I personally helped BUILD my house. I used power tools that I never thought I would be brave enough to use on my own prior. It seemed like a lot of hours having to be put into volunteering for our sweat equity, but it was absolutely worth the hard work!”

Catie, Habitat Homeowner

“I volunteer with Habitat because it’s a great organization. I like knowing that all the sales at the ReStore go to help those who need housing or revitalization. I have always been blessed with a roof over my head, so I’m glad to help others.”

Kari, ReStore Volunteer

“Growing up in my own home meant that I was not different from other people and could have my own house. It reduced stresses like worrying about crazy rent increases and gave our family freedom to cook our cultural foods without getting complaints from anyone.”

Sammie, Child of Habitat Homeowners

“My favorite part about volunteering with Habitat is the comradery I have with other volunteers. It also gives me a renewed sense of purpose. I have been blessed with good health and financial security, so I want to give back.”

Bob, Habitat Volunteer

“It means everything to be a homeowner. We feel safe in our home, and the kids can go outside to play without worrying about traffic. Habitat’s Homeownership program was a great experience with lots of learning, and I truly enjoyed it.”
