Neighborhood Revitalization is going someplace new: inside the home. As part of the national Aging in Place movement, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls now offers limited in-home repairs to qualifying homeowners in the Neighborhood Revitalization program. These new services will help homeowners with limited mobility remain in their homes with the following safety modifications:
- Placing non-skid strips in bathtub or shower
- Placing anti-slip tape on stair treads
- Installing peepholes in entry doors
- Adding grab bars in the bathroom
- Adding handrails for stair
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls now offers limited in-home repairs to qualifying homeowners in the Neighborhood Revitalization program.
Habitat’s Neighborhood Revitalization program partners with homeowners to assist them in maintaining a safe place to live. Like Habitat’s Homeownership program, homeowners must apply and meet qualifications and income guidelines. They also must own and live in the home.
“Sioux Falls Habitat recognizes that communities are confronting challenges and opportunities that relate to the mobility and safety of residents as they remain living in their home,” said Lee Ferguson, Neighborhood Revitalization Coordinator. “By expanding our menu of services, we hope to respond to these challenges and opportunities in a way that fosters safe, livable homes and communities and improves the quality of life for all residents
How It Works
All repairs are done by volunteers and Habitat staff, so residents don’t pay for labor. As a result, the cost of financing these repairs is significantly lower than hiring outside help. Habitat also works with residents to find an affordable way to cover the cost of any supplies. Homeowners always receive a free, no-obligation estimate before any project agreement.
In prior years, the program had been limited to minor exterior repairs like painting or fixing siding, decks, or doors. These services will continue to be offered alongside the new in-home repairs. Neighborhood Revitalization has completed 195 projects for homeowners in Greater Sioux Falls since 2010.
