2020 Highlights: Triumphs Despite the Challenges

How do we begin to summarize 2020? We have seen neighbors and friends who have been deeply affected by a global pandemic with economic repercussions that will no doubt continue into 2021. We cannot forget the challenges and losses. But today, we also want to share some of the triumphs we have witnessed this year.

Four Homes for Families (and More Abroad)

This is the heart of our mission and we celebrate every home for every family. This year we celebrated four new homes virtually. Funded by generous sponsors, grants and donors, these homes were built by small, dedicated groups of volunteers and the families themselves.

If you missed any of our home dedications, they are all available online. We hope to be able to hold in-person celebrations again in 2021 when it is safe to do so.

Our work rippled through the international community, too. Through our tithing program, we helped fund housing solutions for orphans and vulnerable groups, including the Rishipari communities in Bangladesh (pictured here).

Ten Homes Repaired through Neighborhood Revitalization

Neighborhood Revitalization projects help existing homeowners who are unable to afford or make repairs on their own. This helps homeowners remain in their homes with dignity and helps ensure their homes remain safe and livable. Volunteer groups helped 10 households in Greater Sioux Falls, including 6 elderly homeowners and 1 veteran.

450 Volunteers Donated 8,500+ Hours

Since the year isn’t quite over yet, next month we will have a full volunteer recap with recognition for our top volunteers in 2020. Until then, we give thanks to all the groups and individuals who were able to come out and lend a helping hand this year.

New Faces at Habitat and the ReStore

Habitat’s team has grown this year too. Six new employees joined our team in 2020. We also celebrated two milestone anniversaries this year for Caryn Ferguson, ReStore Assistant (15 years) and Lisa Ross, Family Services Coordinator (5 years). Plus, three new members joined our Board of Directors. We give thanks for each and every one of them!
